Making a choice to be active doesn’t need to be difficult. With a little help from the resources on these pages, it can be rewarding and fun and can become part of your routine. In Portsmouth, which is a flat and compact city, many people build activity into their day by walking and cycling.

GETTING ACTIVE

Being active has many benefits, including:

  • helping you lose weight
  • improving your sleep
  • helping you manage stress
  • improving your quality of life
  • reducing your chances of getting illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers
  • reducing your chances of getting joint and back pain and depression

GETTING ACTIVE

People aged 19-64 should aim to:

  • be active every day – any activity is better than none
  • do strengthening activities that work all the major muscles at least two days a week
  • do at least 150 minutes of moderate activity, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity, over a week
  • reduce time spent sitting or lying down and break up long periods of not moving with some activity
